THE CLIMATES OF SPAIN

1)  OCEANIC CLIMATE:  In the north. (Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, Navarra, País Vasco)

Temperature: mild

Precipitation: abundant all year.

2)   MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE:

-       Inland Mediterranean: (interior Andalucía)

Temperature: cold winter and hot summer.

Precipitation: scarce.

-       Typical Mediterranean: (Andalucía, Islas Baleares, Ceuta y Melilla)

Temperature: mild Winter and hot summer.

Precipitation: scarce.

3)  SUBTROPICAL CLIMATE: (Islas Canarias)

Temperature: mild all year.

Precipitation: scarce.

 4)MOUNTAIN CLIMATE: (Pirineos)

Temperature: low winter and cool summer

Precipitation: abundant and snow in Winter.

RELIEF IN ANDALUCÍA

 

COASTAL RELIEF IN ANDALUCIA:

1)  ATLANTIC COAST: is low and sandy.

2)  MEDITERRANEAN COAST: is rocky with cliffs.

INLAND RELIEF IN ANDALUCIA:

1)  SIERRA MORENA: low mountains.

2)  VALLE DEL GUADALQUIVIR: Is a large plain. The Guadalquivir crosses it. At the river mouth, there is a marshland.

3)  SISTEMAS BÉTICOS: high mountains.

-       CORDILLERA SUBBÉTICA: The Guadalquivir begins here.

-       CORDILLERA PENIBÉTICA: Here is Sierra Nevada, Mulhacén is the highest       peak in the peninsula.

-       VALLEYS: depressions between the mountais.

 CLIMATE

What is the climate? The climate is the weather in a specific area, over a long period of time and depends

on the temperature and precipitation.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT CLIMATE

-       Distance from the Equator: The Sun´s rays hit the arear near to the Equator directly and makes it hotter there. As we move north or south, temperatures decrease. This give us three climatic zones:

o  A hot zone.

o  Two temperate zones.

o  Two cold zones.

 

-       Altitude and proximity to the sea: coastal areas have milder temperatures than inland areas.

 

THE CLIMATES ON EARTH

 Hot climates:

-       Equatorial climate: very hot and rains a lot.

-       Tropical climate: rains during one season.

-       Desert climate: little precipitation.

Temperate climates:

-       Mediterranean climate: little rain and high temperatures in summer.

-       Oceanic climate: abundant rain and mild temperatures.

-       Continental climate: cold winters and warm and rainy summers.

Cold climates:

-       Polar climate: precipitation is mainly snow.

-       Mountain climate: frequent precipitation.
